Iceland offers the Long-Term Visa for Remote Work (Langtímaáritun) for non-resident remote workers and self-employed professionals. The program lets eligible applicants live in Iceland for 90 to 180 days (up to 6 months maximum). Non-renewable — must leave Iceland after expiry and wait 12 months before reapplying. while working remotely for clients or employers based outside the country.

Minimum ISK 1,000,000/month (~USD $7,000–$8,200 at April 2026 rates) for single applicant. ISK 1,300,000/month (~USD $9,000–$10,700) if applying with a spouse or cohabiting partner. One of the highest income thresholds globally.

Documents needed

How to Apply for the Iceland DNV

Processing time: 3–4 weeks from the date the Directorate of Immigration receives a complete application. Those already in Iceland should apply at least 14 days before their 90-day visa-free period expires.

  1. 1Confirm eligibility (non-EEA/EFTA national; not requiring a Schengen visa to enter Iceland; remote worker for company outside Iceland; min ISK 1,000,000/month income; not intending to settle in Iceland permanently; no long-term Iceland visa issued in past 12 months).
  2. 2Download and complete the L-802 application form from the Directorate of Immigration website (island.is).
  3. 3Pay the ISK 12,200 fee by international bank transfer.
  4. 4Mail application with all required documents to: Directorate of Immigration, Dalvegur 18, 201 Kópavogur, Iceland — OR deliver in person to the lobby drop box if already in Iceland.
  5. 5Wait 3–4 weeks for approval email from Directorate of Immigration.
  6. 6After notification, travel to Iceland within 90 days.
  7. 7Upon arrival, contact the Directorate of Immigration for visa endorsement in passport.
